Dennis's Story

Text size

Dr. Dennis Karambelas, one of Rhode Island's premier optometrists, died peacefully Sunday morning, surrounded by his family and friends.
Dennis was 65 years old and was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.
He fought bravely throughout and never gave up, thinking he would soon return to the things he was most passionate about including treating his patients and spending time with his loving wife and children.
Dennis adored his family and loved traveling, bicycling, playing chess with his daughters, watching and attending Celtics games and enjoying a glass of good red wine. He loved being part of two basketball leagues, and so enjoyed learning and living everyday to the fullest.
His happiest times were spent with his family on Martha's Vineyard, Captiva, Fla., and in Scotland.
His warm and generous spirit will always be felt in all of the people and places his life touched and helped.

Dr. K, as he was known to many, began practicing in 1978 and opened his own office in 1992, later moving to its current location on South Main Street in Providence.
Dennis was one of less than 200 optometrists worldwide as a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in Cornea and Contact Lenses. He was a 1978 graduate of the New England College of Optometry and a 1974 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He was Adjunct Clinical Instructor of the New England College of Optometry in the Cornea and Contact Lens Residency Program. He was Clinical Teaching Associate in Surgery for the Department of Ophthalmology, Brown University School of Medicine from 1995 to 2010.
Dennis was a Board Member of the R.I. Board of Examiners in Optometry from 1986 to 1997, and a Board Member of the TLC Advisory Panel from 1998 to Present. He was a Clinical Investigator for many studies for contact lens companies.
Dennis was born on January 6th, 1952 to Christopher and Katherine (Coppola) Karambelas in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
He was married to Marion Goff on October 30th, 1989 in a beautiful ceremony on Mykonos, Greece and they have twin daughters, Alexandra L and Devin K Karambelas, whom he treasured.
Dennis was "best brother in the world" to Lois Karambelas and brother-in-law to Jim McCarthy.
Dennis was known as Angel Husband by his wife's family which includes Carol and Tom Bohan, Sharon and Paul Caine, June Dearborn, Tom and Carol Goff. He has many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
