Ruth's Story

GROVELAND: Ruth Evelyn Sanborn Briscoe passed away on January 1, 2016 at her home in Groveland at age the age of 93 surrounded by her family. She was born July 1, 1922 in Laconia, N.H. to Howard Weaver Sanborn and Eleanora Currier Sanborn.

Following graduation from Laconia High School/Tilton-Northfield High she entered the New Hampshire Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Concord, New Hampshire, graduating in 1945 with a diploma in Nursing.

Ruth served in the Army Nurse Corp as a 2nd Lieutenant Registered Nurse, where she was stationed in the Philippines and Japan from 1945 to 1946. Following discharge, Ruth’s nursing career included Medical-Surgical and ICU Nursing at Hale Hospital, as well as private duty nursing. She also worked as an Office Nurse at Summer OB/GYN and served as Charge Nurse at the Hannah Dustin Nursing Home.

Other experiences included a Instructor Home Nursing Course for the Red Cross, Paraprofessional Counselor for NorthEssexHealth Resources, and a volunteer telephone outreach worker for the Groveland Council on Aging.

In addition to Ruth’s love of family, her many interests included therapeutic massage, gardening, sewing, classical music and animal care.

Ruth was a 20 year member of the National Grange as well a member of the Red Cross and Groveland Congregational Church.

Ruth leaves behind her four children, daughters, Margaret Rawson and her husband, William, Shirley Briscoe and her life partner, Victor Fialho, Beverly Howard and her husband, William, and a son, Richard Briscoe; her four grandchildren, Daniel Briscoe, Joshua McAuliffe, Kelsey McAuliffe, Joel Howard as well as two great-grandchildren, Austin W. Briscoe and Colin Mitchell McAuliffe.

Ruth is also survived by her siblings, Alison Sanborn and Margaret Ryon, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ruth is predeceased by her siblings, Russell, Ellen, Haven and Lois and her husband, Austin R. Briscoe.
