Raymond Edward Hunkins peacefully passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at the Joanne's House at Hope Hospice, Bonita Springs, Fla.
Ray was born on November 14, 1928 in Haverhill to Albert and Ruth (Dow) Hunkins. He is survived by his wife, Vera (Wingate), whom he had 67 wonderful years of marriage. His children, Chuck and Nancy (Greenstein), Jill and Tom Hamelin, Wendy and Randy Lewis, his sister-in-law and nephew (who were like his children) Jo (Wingate) and Allun Hamblett, his grandchildren Damon (wife, Heather) and Justin (wife Rachel) Hunkins, Travis (wife, Aimee), Jacob, Jameson and Tricia (fiancée, Jean-Bernard) Hamelin, Brock (fiancee, Jordan) Lewis and Sarah Hamblett, eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, sister, Natalie Evans and many nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his sisters, Albertine Hamblett and Minerva Rose.
Ray graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1948, and Bradley University. Ray served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict after which he joined his father at the family business, Hunkins Jewelers, in downtown Haverhill. He and Vera raised their family in Plaistow, N.H. and enjoyed skiing in the winter and boating on Lake Winnipesaukee in the summers. After retiring in 1985, he and Vera moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., later moving to Ft. Myers to be closer to family.
Ray was a past president of the Haverhill Lions club, member of Masonic Lodge F&AM, the Rotary Club of Haverhill and member and past officer of the Port Charlotte Rotary club. He was an avid HAM radio operator and enjoyed golfing, fishing, dancing and spending time with family and friends. He looked forward to family holidays and Thanksgivings on Sanibel.
Ray will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family gives thanks to the many wonderful people at Joanne’s House for caring and loving Ray and especially for being a support for Vera and the family during his time there.
As per Ray’s request there will be no calling hours. After cremation, burial will be private and held at the family’s convenience.
