Mary E.'s Story
Mary E. Demand Backus, 81, of Rossville, Ga., formerly of Haverhill, passed away on April 2, 2016, of natural causes.
She was born in Haverhill on Welcome Street on Dec. 25, 1934, daughter of the late Francis G. Demand and Hazel Washburn Demand. She was educated in the Haverhill Public Schools. Mary lived the majority of her life in Haverhill where she was known and loved by many people in the community. She worked at loacl businesses including Career Resources, Tony's Pizza and Eastern Canvas. She was well-known at the church meals and a frequent visitor at Richard's Variety Store where she socialized and told jokes. Every year she went to the Mother's Day breakfast at the Elks Lodge in Haverhill with her daughter, Kathy.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Backus on May 2, 1986, and her daughter, Melissa who was born Oct. 13, 1971.
Her survivors include her brother, William Demand and his wife, Dottie of Haverhill; her children, Marcia of Wareham, Mass., Kathleen of Haverhill, Pamela and her her partner, Sherman of Lawrence, Michael and his wife, Kim of Orlando, Fla., David and his partner, Jen Publicover of Newburyport, Lisa and her partner, Jim of Oswego, N.Y., Thomas of Rossville, Ga., Daniel and his wife, Christy of Rossville, Ga. Mary lived with Daniel and Christy for the past five years and was cared for by them until her death.
She leaves 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous extended family relatives and friends. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Celebration of Life will be announced in this paper at a later date.
