Malcolm G.'s Story
Malcolm George Johnston, 94, of Methuen and former resident of Andover and Haverhill, passed away early Sunday, February 26, at Methuen Village.
He was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, on February 22, 1923, the second child of the late John George and Ethel (Coates) Johnston. Malcolm graduated from Reading (Massachusetts) High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In 1943 he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Lumsden, who died in 2012. Malcolm was posted to the U.S. air-base at Levenham, England in 1944, where he served to the end of the war as radio operator and side gunner on a B-17 bomber that flew missions over Germany.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his three sons, (Malcolm Andrew and wife Christine of Clio, Calif., Robert and wife, Jan of Andover, Gerald and wife, Ann Marie of Haverhill); seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Grandson, Matthew Johnston passed away in 2001.
