Frederic J. McCarthy, 60, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2017, at his 19 Pleasant Street home after a battle with cancer.
Born September 24, 1956, he was a lifelong resident of Salem, attending St. Joseph Regional School and graduated 1975 from Salem High School where he was freshman "King" and played football for four years. He retired in 2012 from the AMTRAK where he was a conductor on the commuter rail line for 20 years.
The son of the late Bernard J. and Claire McCarthy, he is survived by his wife of 20 years, Christine of Salem; son, Christopher (and Jillian) McCarthy; and grandson, Carter of Pepperell, Mass.; sisters, Maurita McCarthy of Columbia, Mo.; Kathleen (and Kofi) Davies of Carlsbad, Calif.; brothers, Bernard McCarthy Jr. (and Belinda) McCarthy of Springfield, Mo., Paul McCarthy of Elk, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, September 22, at 10:30 a.m., in Saint Joseph Church, 40 Main Street, Salem. Interment of his ashes will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery with a mercy meal following at the Knights of Columbus, 37 Main Street, Salem.
Memorial contributions in Fred's name may be made to the charity of one's choice.
