LA CROSSE, WI: Evelyn Louise (Ross) Oliver, 87, of La Crosse, previously of Freeport, Ill. and Plaistow, N.H. died Friday, December 18, after an extended illness. In her final hours, she was surrounded by her family. She departed for eternal rest and joy, as promised by her faith. Born on December 8, 1928, in Haverhill, she was the daughter of Arthur and Annie (Arnold) Ross of East Kingston, N.H. In 1955, she was married to Carleton Lee Oliver.
In 1988 she retired as an IRS computer audit specialist. She had various executive and administrative responsibilities, and was sought after for her computer abilities.
As a veteran, she is most proud of her service in the Women’s Army Corps where she was a distinguished OCS military graduate. She achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant and led the Women’s Honor Guard in Japan during the Korean War. Evelyn received a military commendation for the successful evacuation of typhoon victims from an American Girl Scout camp at Mount Fuji, Japan.
Evelyn enjoyed life and her friends. She was a devout Christian. She loved traveling, yard sales and antiques. She held memberships in the John G. Whittier Association, Disabled American Veterans, National WAC Veterans Association, National Officers Washington, DC, and Chapter 14 WAC Veterans-Boston.
She is survived by her son, Wayne (Sandra) Oliver, and granddaughters, Allyse Lee and Lauren Elizabeth Oliver, and nephews, Edward LeBlanc of Tennessee and Bruce LeBlanc of Maine. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carleton; and her sister, Janette (Ross) LeBlanc.
She had a magnetic personality and was loved by many. For those family and friends she left behind, she will be deeply missed. She leaves behind a legacy of Christian love.
The family would like to thank the staff and friends who served her so well at Bethany Willows and later Bethany-Riverside. Memorials in Evelyn’s honor can be made to Bethany Lutheran Homes or the La Crosse Freedom Honor Flight. While Evelyn did not have the strength to make the trip, she was proud that her daughter-in-law, Sandra, was a guardian on the first flight from La Crosse.
A memorial service for Evelyn was held at the Bethany Homes Faith & Life Center in La Crosse on Tuesday, December 29, at 11 a.m. Online guest book is available at www.schumacher-kish.com.
