HAVERHILL: Catherine (Carelis) Karampatsos, 97, of Haverhill, died peacefully at home on Sunday evening, February 14, 2016.
Mrs. Karampatsos was born in Haverhill, October 21, 1918, daughter of the late Socrates and Sophia (Karadimopoulos) Carelis. Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mrs. Karampatsos graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1937.
She was employed in the local shoe industry prior to her marriage to the late John Karampatsos in 1941.
Bright and very well read, Catherine was quick to answer any question and solve any problems. She was a talented cook specializing in Greek cuisine of Asia Minor, Greece, including baking spanakopita, pastichio and all Greek pastries. She adored animals, raising a number of cats as well as her beloved Collie dogs, Rudy, Pasha and Rory. Her talents extended to decorating and spending countless hours gardening and beautifying her yard with great style, which was her pride and joy.
Her curiosity and wonder allowed her and her husband to travel throughout the United States and Europe.
Catherine was happiest spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always enjoyed communicating with friends and relatives, especially those of Greek heritage.
She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, John Karampatsos, who died in 2006 and her brother, Nicholas Carelis who died at the young age of 25.
Her survivors include her children, John Karampatsos and his wife Elaine of Haverhill, Victoria Simmons of Ipswich, Rebecca Karampatsos of Haverhill, grandchildren; Kimberly and Kristin Karampatsos, Elissa Cammarata, Robert, Zachary and Antigone Simmons, great grandchildren; Sara Cammarata, Sabine and Cole Simmons. Catherine also leaves her sister, Mary (Carelis) Battiato of Haverhill; her Godson, Nicholas Carelis and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her calling hours were held Wednesday morning February 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial was in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Contributions in her memory may be made to the MSPCA, Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
