Arthur R. "Art"'s Story
Arthur R. (Art) Batchelder passed away on December 6, 2016 from interstitial lung disease. Art was born in Haverhill, on April 17, 1932, the only child of Arthur H. and Helen L. Batchelder. Art graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1954 with a BS in Agronomy. He later received an MS in Agronomy from Virginia Tech and a PhD in Soil Science from Cornell University. When he graduated from UMass he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. In the Armor branch of the Army. He served on active duty for two years most of it as a Platoon Leader with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Germany. He married Ruth Hunt of Haverhill in 1955, they later divorced. They had three children, Paul of Loveland, Gary of Rawlings, Wyo., and Cynthia (Mrs. Jeff Feneis) of Johnstown. He married Barbara Smith in 1999 and made their home in Fort Collins with their dogs Oliver and Molly. After separation from active duty, Art began a 33 year career as soil scientist with the Agricultural Research Service of the US Dept of Agriculture. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA, Blacksburg, VA, lthaca, NY and finally Fort Collins. Art was a 32 degree Mason and spent many years serving as an advisor to two youth groups, the Order of DeMolay and Job’s Daughter’s. For his service, he received the DeMolay Legion of Honor, the highest honor awarded by that organization. He lived in Red Feather Lakes for six years and was a member of the volunteer fire department, editor of the local newspaper and a member of several organizations. When he returned to Fort Collins, he became a volunteer mail carrier for the Poudre Fire Authority, a position he enjoyed for almost 17 years until his illness forced him to retire. In addition to his wife Barbara and his children, he is survived by two grandchildren; Josh Feneis of Johnstown, and Amy (Mrs. David) Haram of Wellington;a great-granddaughter to be, Ellie Haram of Wellington; brother-in-law, Donald Smith of Rockland; three stepdaughters, Carol Taylor of Florida, Lynn Haste of Montana and Ellen Jackson of Maine; three stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S. Hwy 287, Ft. Collins, CO 80525 on Monday, December 12th, 2016 at 10 a.m. with graveside inurnment services immediately following in Resthaven Garden of Memory. A reception will follow at Resthaven Funeral Home.
