Alfred N. Poirier
Born in Haverhill on May 16, 1926, Mr. Poirier was the oldest son of Alfred I. and Helen (Boisselle) Poirier. He attended St. Joseph's Grammar School and the Haverhill Trade School, studying to be a machinist. In May 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, reporting for duty days before graduation, needing his mother to attend the ceremony and receive his diploma. He served in the Pacific as a motor machinist mate second class, supporting and operating amphibious landing craft. Returning to Haverhill in May 1946 with an honorable discharge, he continued service in the Reserves with a brief tour of duty later in Korea. In October 1946, he married Alice Foisy. They had 5 children and continued to live and work in the Haverhill area. In 1972, he transitioned from being a machinist and shop foreman to joining the teaching staff of the newly opened Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, obtaining his teaching certificates and beginning the path to earning his bachelor's degree in 1981 from Fitchburg State College. He thoroughly enjoyed teaching and helping to shape students to be productive and take pride in their work. He was a long-time member of the, then, St. Joseph's Parish and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He retired from teaching in 1986 to begin a life of RV traveling across the country with his wife, eventually settling in Las Vegas, NV and later in Madison, WI to be closer to family.
He enjoyed photography, hunting, travel, bingo, understanding how things worked, and particularly the space program and astronomy. He took pride in having, at one point, worked on machining components used in the space program.
He is survived by his siblings Norman, Roland, Paul, Jeannette, Irene, Donald, and Marie and by his children, Beverly, David and his son, David Jr., Mark and his son Alexander, Frank, Jeff and his wife Noreen as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Eva, Henry, and Lorraine.
The family would like to extend their heart-felt appreciation to the staff at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics as well as Fountainhead Homes for their many years of care and dedication.
